Susan "La Miss" Traverse was the only woman to ever officially serve in the French Foreign Legion.
Susan Travers was a British woman who joined the French armed forces during the Second World War. She first served as a nurse and ambulance driver in the Red Cross before joining the Free French Legion. Travers was a talented driver and became the personal driver of General Marie-Pierre Kœnig. She took part in the Battle of Bir Hakeim, where she distinguished herself through her bravery and her commitment to the wounded. Travers was honored with numerous awards, including the Croix de Guerre and the Médaille Militaire.
