Lieutenant General Annibale Bergonzoli was a high-ranking Italian officer who served in the First World War, the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War and had a long and eventful military career. He took part in the First World War, where he was awarded the Silver Cross of the Military Order of Savoy for his bravery. During the Spanish Civil War, he commanded the Italian volunteer legion "Littorio" and played a key role in the conquest of Santander. During the Second World War, he was commander of the XXIII Italian Army Corps in North Africa and was taken prisoner after the Battle of Beda Fomm.
Bergonzoli was not only known for his military skills, but also for his striking appearance. His bushy beard was his trademark and contributed to his fearsome appearance.
